Why Michaelgate makes Stage 1 worth watching
Stage 1 is not a conventional opening day designed simply to put the first leader’s jersey on a sprinter.
Michaelgate averages 11.3%, with its steep cobbled road forming one of the defining features of the Lincoln Grand Prix circuit. The Tour of Britain peloton will tackle it five times after already spending several hours racing through Lincolnshire.
One ascent is an explosive effort. Five gradually change the type of rider capable of reaching the finish at the front.
That terrain particularly suits Benoît Cosnefroy, who enters the race as one of the strongest overall favourites. Tim Wellens gives UAE Team Emirates-XRG another obvious option, while Jasper Stuyven, Lewis Askey, Rick Pluimers, Filippo Ganna, Florian Vermeersch and Fabio Christen all have characteristics suited to short, repeated climbing efforts.
The wider race contains no individual time trial and no summit finish, so Stage 1 also carries more GC significance than a normal opening stage. Losing 15 or 20 seconds in Lincoln is dangerous when there is no obvious later opportunity to recover it in one large effort.
Can Olav Kooij survive Michaelgate?
One of the most interesting questions is whether Olav Kooij can turn what looks like a stage for puncheurs into another sprint opportunity.
Kooij has seven career Tour of Britain stage victories and arrives with Decathlon CMA CGM as one of the quickest riders in the field. His association with this race has become particularly strong, with the Dutchman winning Stage 1 of the 2025 Tour of Britain in Southwold before going on to take three stages during the week.
His climbing ability has also developed enough that assuming Michaelgate automatically eliminates him would be risky.
If Kooij survives the five ascents with the front group, the tactical calculation changes completely. Cosnefroy, Wellens and the other GC riders have little incentive to carry one of the best sprinters in professional cycling towards the finish.
That could make the penultimate laps more aggressive than the final climb itself.
Kooij is also beginning a new chapter at this year’s race after joining Decathlon CMA CGM on a three-year deal, with Cees Bol forming part of the sprint structure built around him.
Tim Merlier faces a tougher challenge on Wednesday. The Belgian may possess even greater pure sprint speed, but five repetitions of a double-digit climb should favour Kooij’s broader range. Merlier’s most obvious opportunity comes a day later on the flatter road from Boston to Skegness.
Stage 1 can already shape the overall Tour of Britain
The opening stage matters because there is no obvious reset point later in the race.
Saturday’s Stage 4 through the Yorkshire Dales is the hardest day, but even that does not finish at the summit of its main climb. The final stage around Earlston also contains significant climbing without providing one simple uphill test where a rider can expect to recover a large deficit.
Small differences therefore matter.
A ten-second bonus combined with five seconds gained on Michaelgate is significant. A rider caught behind a split and conceding 20 seconds could spend the rest of the week trying to undo the damage.
The 2025 race demonstrated just how important those margins can become. Romain Grégoire eventually won the Tour of Britain by only two seconds from Remco Evenepoel.
There is every reason to treat Wednesday’s finale as the beginning of the GC race rather than merely the fight for the first leader’s jersey.
Ben Swift starts his final Tour of Britain
Stage 1 also begins Ben Swift’s final Tour of Britain after the Netcompany INEOS rider confirmed that he will retire at the end of the 2026 season.
The 38-year-old is bringing an 18-season professional career to a close and deliberately included his home Tour among his final races. His programme is then expected to continue through several Italian events before Paris-Tours brings the career itself to an end.
