The GP Oetingen is one of the many great one-day Belgian races at the lower levels. In 2022, it’ll be a 1.2 race – the lowest classification for a UCI one-day race. That said, because of its position in the calendar during the Spring Classics, the start list is always of high quality. This season, it’s sandwiched between the pair of Women’s WorldTour races of Strade Bianche and Ronde van Drenthe in early March.
2021’s GP Oetingen saw Elisa Balsamo take the victory in a smallish bunch sprint. That would be her last victory until she became World Champion in Flanders much later on in 2021. Confirming the high quality of the racers, Jolien d’Hoore was 2nd and Marianne Vos 3rd. Elisa Balsamo’s new team, Trek-Segafredo aren’t race the 2022 GP Oetingen. D’Hoore is now retired and in the team car as a DS for NXTG. Plus it looks like Jumbo Visma won’t be racing, so Marianne Vos won’t be at the 2022 GP Oetingen either. Kristen Faulkner who was 4th in 2021 could make a return with her new team BikeExchange – Jayco however.
Of the teams that are confirmed for 2022, we can probably expect Lorena Wiebes to take part for Team DSM. She’ll naturally become a big favourite for the victory. Marit Raaijmakers would be a shot for Human Powered Health or maybe their pair of young Americans, Schmid and MacPherson. It’s an ideal race for UAE Team ADQ’s Marta Bastianelli as well.
