Why the 2026 Vuelta route is unusually hard
The official route contains more than 58,000 metres of elevation gain.

The opening stage starts around Casino Square and finishes on Boulevard Albert I, part of the famous Monaco Formula 1 circuit.

The opening week moves quickly into the mountains
Stage 2 runs from Monaco to Manosque over 215.2km and is officially classified as hilly.

Stage 9 finishes at Alto de Aitana after 187.5km.
It is the final stage before the first rest day and one of the most important early mountain tests.
Aitana is a long, sustained ascent rather than a short ramp.
The stage therefore rewards riders able to maintain a high climbing pace for an extended period. Purely explosive climbers may find it harder to create a decisive advantage unless the race has already become selective.
The timing increases its importance.

The race enters Andalusia for its decisive second half
The final ten stages take place within Andalusia.
This gives the 2026 edition a strong regional identity and creates a concentrated final block of mountain roads, heat and difficult transitions.
The race visits climbs including Calar Alto, La Pandera and Peñas Blancas before the final mountain finish at Collado del Alguacil.

Controlling a breakaway requires several riders to spend hours riding at the front of the peloton.
