As the 2025 women’s cycling season gets underway, the spring classics will once again take centre stage. These early-season races are some of the toughest and most prestigious one-day events in the sport. Taking place on a mix of cobbled roads, steep climbs, and fast, open terrain, they demand a combination of endurance, power, and smart racecraft. Riders and teams have to carefully plan their schedules to balance form, fatigue, and the chance to win some of the biggest races of the year (and think about later on in the season too).
Unlike stage races, which allow riders to build into competition over several days, the classics are relentless from the start. Races like Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and Omloop van het Hageland at the beginning of March offer the first real test of form after the winter break. Some riders choose to start their seasons here, while others delay their first race to be at their best for later classics like the Tour of Flanders or Paris-Roubaix. The first rebooted version of the Milan-Sanremo Women is a popular starting point as well, with Lotte Kopecky set to start her 2025 season there.
The women’s peloton is stronger than ever, and the variety of races on the calendar means different types of riders will be targeting different events. Sprinters like Lorena Wiebes and Charlotte Kool will look to races like Brugge-De Panne and Gent-Wevelgem, which often finish in fast bunch sprints. Strong all-rounders such as Lotte Kopecky, Elisa Longo Borghini, and Pfeiffer Georgi will aim to dominate across multiple classics, especially those featuring cobbles and short climbs. Meanwhile, climbers and puncheurs such as Kasia Niewiadoma, Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio, and Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig are likely to really focus in on the Ardennes classics, where explosive power on the steepest climbs is essential.
