The AG Tour de la Semois is a late-season Belgian stage race of 2 stages in a corner of southern Belgium not often visited by elite-level cycling. Whilst Flanders gets all the attention, there are only a few races taking place solely in Wallonie. One of those occurred earlier in the week with the St Feullien Grand Prix de Wallonie in Namur, Le Samyn des Dames is another, with the AG Tour de la Semois closing things out for the 2024 season. The first edition in 2020 was a one-day race won by Inge van der Heijden ahead of Yara Kastelijn as both started to gear up for the impending cyclocross season.
The following year, expanded to the now usual 2 days of racing, Floortje Mackaij won from Tayler Wiles and Ella Harris in a season still affected by Covid in the peloton. Maria Giulia Confalonieri broke the Dutch deadlock in 2022 and is the only non-Dutch GC winner of the race so far. She finished ahead of Mischa Bredewold and another Italian Eleonora Gasparrini to make up the podium that year. 2022 is also the only year in which the GC winner hasn’t won a stage of the race. Finishing 2nd and 3rd was enough for Confalonieri, with a decent gap established on Stage 1 that meant Wiebes wasn’t able to claim enough back on Stage 2 to take the GC.
Last year saw Karlijn Swinkels able to dominate. She won both stages, with the GC brought down to 5 riders after a first stage which saw a group that size finish 2 minutes ahead of the peloton. It was a closer affair the next day but Karlijn Swinkels once again got clear of the peloton and was joined by Clara Koppenburg who had finished only a few seconds behind the day before for a genuine GC fight. Swinkels always felt inevitable to win the sprint against Koppenburg the climber and in doing so took the stage and the GC victory.
