Tour de France Femmes 2022 – Stage 5 Route & Detail

Stage 5 feels like a relatively simple stage for the sprinters. 3 climbs provide a small headache but none of them are too tough. The last climb once again has been set up for the GC riders to attack for bonus seconds but with 20km to go until the finish, there should be enough time for the sprint teams to get themselves organised and chase down any flyers. Odds are it’s a victory for Lorena Wiebes.

There isn’t too much here for a day’s break to get excited about. With the QoM climbs in the previous stages the jersey shouldn’t change hands here and the intermediate sprint at Charmes should be fairly formulaic.

The finish town of Saint-Dié-des-Vosges is the only one that hosts a finish and start of this year’s Tour de France Femmes. Originally destroyed and rebuilt following a fire in 1757, half of the town was rebuilt again following WW2. An interesting footnote of history is that the American continent (South American initially) got its name from the Gymnase Visgien in Saint-Die-des-Vosges. Published in the Cosmographiae Introductio in 1507, the naming achieved notoriety and gained acceptance leading to Saint-Dié-des-Vosge being known as the “godmother of America”.
