Tadej Pogačar continues to lead the 2026 Tour de France after a dramatic Stage 15 in which Remco Evenepoel won at Plateau de Solaison and Jonas Vingegaard crashed out of the race.
Evenepoel beat Pogačar in the uphill finish and collected four more bonus seconds than the yellow jersey. He therefore reduced his overall deficit from 5:04 to exactly five minutes while moving into second place following Vingegaard’s withdrawal.
Isaac del Toro produced another major ride for UAE Team Emirates-XRG. Despite being caught in the crash that ended Vingegaard’s Tour, the Mexican returned to the front group, finished third and climbed from seventh to third overall.
Del Toro also took the white jersey from Paul Seixas. Pogačar strengthened his lead in the mountains classification, while Mads Pedersen retained green after limiting his losses to Jasper Philipsen at the early intermediate sprint.

Pogačar remains five minutes clear
Pogačar did not win Stage 15, but his position in yellow became considerably stronger.
The Slovenian followed Evenepoel and Del Toro on the final ascent before finishing second in the uphill sprint. Evenepoel gained four seconds through the difference in finish-line bonuses, reducing the gap between them to five minutes.
That was the only time Pogačar conceded to his new closest rival.
Vingegaard had begun the day second overall at 4:30 but crashed in Bonneville with approximately 20km remaining. He was unable to continue and left the race in an ambulance with his right arm supported in a sling.
His abandonment removes the rider who had represented the clearest long-term threat to Pogačar throughout the Tour. The circumstances and immediate consequences are explained in our article on why Jonas Vingegaard abandoned the Tour de France.
Six stages remain, including the individual time trial and three major Alpine days, so the race is not mathematically over. Pogačar can nevertheless begin the final week with a substantial advantage and without needing to respond to Vingegaard’s expected attacks.

Evenepoel wins the stage and moves into second
Evenepoel produced his strongest climbing result of the Tour at Plateau de Solaison.
The Belgian remained with Pogačar and Del Toro after the leading group split on the steep final ascent. He then accelerated inside the closing metres and beat the yellow jersey to claim his first road stage victory at the Tour.
The victory moved Evenepoel into second overall at exactly five minutes.
His immediate priority will be consolidating that position rather than attempting to recover the entire deficit to Pogačar in one move.
Stage 16 provides an ideal opportunity. The 26.1km individual time trial from Évian-les-Bains to Thonon-les-Bains suits Evenepoel and should allow him to gain further time on most of the riders behind him.
The fight for second place is not settled, but Evenepoel now has 58 seconds over Del Toro and more than a minute over every other podium contender.

Del Toro climbs onto the provisional podium
Del Toro was one of several riders affected by the crash in Bonneville.
The UAE rider returned to the leading group, followed Pogačar and Evenepoel on Plateau de Solaison and finished six seconds behind the stage winner.
That performance moved him from seventh to third overall.
Del Toro now trails Pogačar by 5:58 and begins the final week 25 seconds ahead of Seixas. Lipowitz is a further 25 seconds behind the Frenchman.
The Mexican also took control of the young rider classification.
His time trial will now be measured against Seixas, Ayuso and Lipowitz as much as Evenepoel or Pogačar. A competitive ride on Stage 16 could establish Del Toro as the strongest candidate for the final podium place.
Seixas loses white but stays fourth overall
Seixas finished fourth on the stage, 58 seconds behind Evenepoel.
The 19-year-old remained close to the three leading riders during the early part of the final climb before losing ground as the pace increased.
He retained fourth place overall but lost the white jersey to Del Toro.
Seixas now trails the Mexican by 25 seconds in both the general and young rider classifications. The difference remains small, but the Stage 16 time trial may favour Del Toro.
Seixas continues to exceed expectations in his first Tour. He begins the final week only 25 seconds from the overall podium and 25 seconds from reclaiming white.

Lipowitz remains firmly in the podium contest
Lipowitz finished alongside Seixas, 58 seconds behind Evenepoel.
The German moved into fifth overall at 6:48, leaving him 50 seconds behind Del Toro and 25 seconds behind Seixas.
His position gives Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe two riders inside the top five.
Evenepoel is now the clear leader and strongest candidate for second place, but Lipowitz can still challenge for the final podium position. His strength against the clock may allow him to gain time on Seixas and reduce his deficit to Del Toro.
Red Bull can therefore enter Stage 16 with two separate objectives: winning the stage through Evenepoel and improving Lipowitz’s position in the podium battle.
Ayuso, Skjelmose and Martinez remain within range
Ayuso dropped to sixth overall after finishing two minutes behind Evenepoel.
The Spaniard now sits 7:25 behind Pogačar and 1:27 from the provisional podium. His previous time-trial results mean he cannot be removed from the contest, although he needs a strong performance on Stage 16.
Skjelmose is seventh at 9:38 after finishing with Lenny Martinez on Plateau de Solaison.
Martinez moved into eighth overall at 10:28 after producing one of his strongest climbing performances of the race.
The gaps are becoming more substantial, but Stage 16 can still reorder this part of the standings. Ayuso and Skjelmose should gain time on several lighter climbers, while Martinez must limit his losses before the Tour returns to the mountains.

Pidcock slips to ninth after another day in the breakaway
Tom Pidcock spent a third consecutive stage in the breakaway but was unable to protect the position he had gained on Stage 13.
The British rider reached the final climb ahead of the general classification group before being caught and passed by the leading contenders.
He finished 13th on the stage and now sits ninth overall at 10:56.
Pidcock remains on course for a strong final position, but his podium challenge has effectively ended. He is almost five minutes behind Del Toro and faces a time trial that is unlikely to favour him.
The remaining mountain stages may offer further opportunities to attack, particularly if the leading teams no longer view him as a direct podium threat.

Pedersen limits the damage at the intermediate sprint
Pedersen retained the green jersey after collecting 20 points at the intermediate sprint.
Philipsen won the sprint and scored 25, reducing Pedersen’s lead by five points. The Dane nevertheless enters the second rest day with a 31-point advantage.
Girmay collected 14 points and remains third on 361, 56 points behind Pedersen.
Tim Merlier’s withdrawal before the end of Stage 15 removed one of the leading riders from the competition. Max Kanter consequently moved into fourth place after collecting 16 points at the intermediate sprint.
Kooij remains fifth despite the mountain terrain providing no realistic opportunity to add significantly to his total.
The green jersey remains competitive. Pedersen has the strongest position, but Philipsen and Girmay still have several opportunities remaining if they can survive the Alps and reach the final stages.

Pogačar strengthens his polka-dot jersey lead
Pogačar collected 15 points for finishing second on the hors catégorie Plateau de Solaison.
That moved him to 67 points and increased his lead over Paret-Peintre to 22.
Evenepoel received 20 points for winning at the summit and moved into fifth place in the mountains classification. Del Toro collected 12, while Seixas gained ten.
The general classification contenders now occupy six of the first nine positions in the mountains standings.
That reflects the concentration of points available at summit finishes. Riders targeting the polka-dot jersey from breakaways will need to score heavily during the final Alpine stages before Pogačar reaches the decisive climbs.

Pogačar may continue leading the polka-dot competition while wearing yellow. When one rider leads both classifications, the mountains jersey is worn on the road by the next eligible rider in the standings.

Del Toro takes white from Seixas
The young rider classification changed leader for the second consecutive stage.
Seixas had taken white from Ayuso at Le Markstein, but Del Toro’s podium finish on Stage 15 moved the Mexican ahead of both riders.
Only 25 seconds separate Del Toro and Seixas.
Ayuso is third at 1:30, keeping three riders within a relatively narrow margin before the individual time trial.
Del Toro is likely to start Stage 16 as the favourite to retain white. He has more experience and a stronger record against the clock than Seixas, although Ayuso could also recover much of his deficit.
The competition remains open because the final week contains three severe mountain stages after the time trial.

UAE closes rapidly on Lidl-Trek
Lidl-Trek remains at the top of the team classification, but its advantage has been reduced to 3:19.
UAE placed Pogačar second, Del Toro third and Adam Yates ninth on Stage 15. Those three results gave the team a particularly strong combined time and allowed it to take a substantial amount back from Lidl-Trek.
Lidl still benefited from strong rides by Skjelmose, Ayuso and Quinn Simmons.
The team classification adds together the times of each squad’s three highest finishers on every stage. It is therefore possible for a team without the yellow jersey to lead the competition through greater depth.

UAE’s combination of Pogačar, Del Toro and Yates makes it a serious threat during the remaining mountain stages.
Who will wear each jersey on Stage 16?
The riders leading the four main classifications after Stage 15 are:
- Yellow jersey: Tadej Pogačar
- Green jersey: Mads Pedersen
- Polka-dot jersey: Tadej Pogačar
- White jersey: Isaac del Toro
Because Pogačar leads both the general and mountains classifications, he will wear yellow in the Stage 16 time trial.
Paret-Peintre is second in the mountains standings and should wear the polka-dot jersey on Pogačar’s behalf, provided no classification or eligibility detail is changed by the race jury.
Del Toro will start in white for the first time during this Tour.
What happens next at the Tour de France?
Monday 20 July is the second rest day.
The race resumes on Tuesday with a 26.1km individual time trial from Évian-les-Bains to Thonon-les-Bains.
Evenepoel begins as the leading candidate for the stage victory and has an opportunity to strengthen second place. Pogačar can extend his yellow jersey advantage without needing to take excessive risks.
The most significant changes may come in the fight for third.
Del Toro, Seixas, Lipowitz and Ayuso are separated by only 1:27. Their performances against the clock will establish the order before the Tour reaches Orcières-Merlette and the two summit finishes at Alpe d’Huez.
