Tour de France 2026 team-by-team guide

Tour-de-France-stage-18-preview-can-all-conquering-leader-Tadej-Pogacar-defend-his-yellow-jersey-on-the-same-climb-where-he-lost-the-race-in-2023-1

The Tour de France 2026 startlist gives the race a familiar top line: Tadej Pogačar, Jonas Vingegaard and Remco Evenepoel shape the yellow jersey battle, while Jasper Philipsen, Tim Merlier, Olav Kooij, Biniam Girmay, Arnaud De Lie, Mads Pedersen and others form a deep sprint and stage-hunting field.

But the team-by-team picture is more complicated than that. Some squads arrive with clear leaders and obvious objectives. UAE Team Emirates-XRG and Team Visma | Lease a Bike are built around the yellow jersey. Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe have Evenepoel and a strong climbing structure. Alpecin-Premier Tech are split between Jasper Philipsen’s sprint ambitions and Mathieu van der Poel’s stage-hunting value. Soudal Quick-Step look more sprint-focused than GC-focused, while Lidl-Trek, EF Education-EasyPost, Tudor Pro Cycling Team and Uno-X Mobility bring some of the strongest attacking depth in the race.

The route makes that important. The 2026 Tour opens in Barcelona with a team time-trial, moves quickly through the Pyrenees, then gives the peloton a hilly Massif Central block, a dangerous Vosges and Jura section, an individual time-trial, and a final Alpine weekend built around back-to-back stages to Alpe d’Huez. It is not a race that can be controlled by one type of rider or one type of team.

This guide runs through every squad on the supplied Tour de France 2026 startlist, looking at leadership, tactical identity, stage-win chances, GC ambitions and likely race roles. For the wider route context, see our Tour de France 2026 full route guide, Tour de France 2026 route analysis and full start list for Tour de France 2026.

The strongest GC teams are UAE Team Emirates-XRG, Team Visma | Lease a Bike, Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe and Netcompany INEOS. The strongest sprint structure belongs to Alpecin-Premier Tech, with Soudal Quick-Step and Decathlon CMA CGM Team close behind. The most interesting stage-hunting depth sits with EF Education-EasyPost, Lidl-Trek, Tudor Pro Cycling Team, Uno-X Mobility and TotalEnergies.

Alpecin-Premier Tech

Riders: Ramses Debruyne, Silvan Dillier, Tim Marsman, Jasper Philipsen, Edward Planckaert, Jonas Rickaert, Mathieu van der Poel, Emiel Verstrynge

Alpecin-Premier Tech have one of the clearest dual identities in the race. Jasper Philipsen gives them a genuine green jersey and stage-win contender, while Mathieu van der Poel gives them one of the most dangerous stage hunters in the peloton.

The sprint structure is excellent. Philipsen has Jonas Rickaert as a trusted final lead-out, Edward Planckaert and Silvan Dillier as support pieces, and Van der Poel as the most powerful positioning rider in the race when he commits to the sprint train. That makes Alpecin-Premier Tech the benchmark team on the flat stages.

The trade-off is Van der Poel’s freedom. He can help Philipsen win bunch sprints, but he can also win hilly stages himself. On the Massif Central days, rolling transition stages and harder finishes, Alpecin will have to decide whether to protect Philipsen’s points ambitions or release Van der Poel as a stage winner.

Emiel Verstrynge and Ramses Debruyne add younger depth, but the team’s Tour will be judged by two things: Philipsen’s sprint return and Van der Poel’s ability to turn hard stages into opportunities.

For their sprint structure, see our best lead-out riders at the Tour de France 2026, best sprinters at the Tour de France 2026 and Tour de France 2026 route: best days for sprinters.

Lenny-Martinez-emulates-grandfather-Mariano-with-Tour-de-France-polka-dot-jersey-success-on-Bastille-Day

Bahrain Victorious

Riders: Phil Bauhaus, Damiano Caruso, Kamil Gradek, Lenny Martinez, Matej Mohorič, Robert Stannard, Antonio Tiberi, Vlad Van Mechelen

Bahrain Victorious bring a balanced squad, but not one with a single overwhelming leader. Antonio Tiberi and Lenny Martinez give them two GC or mountain-stage options, Damiano Caruso adds experience, and Matej Mohorič gives them one of the best breakaway riders in the race.

Tiberi is probably the most obvious GC card. He can aim at a strong overall position, especially if he survives the early Pyrenean and time-trial pressure. Martinez brings climbing upside and stage-winning potential, but the Tour’s length and intensity will test how much freedom he gets.

Mohorič may be Bahrain’s best stage-win bet. On rolling or technical days, he has the skill set to win from range. He does not need a perfect finish. He needs a stage where the peloton hesitates and the road becomes difficult to read.

Phil Bauhaus gives the team sprint presence, supported by riders such as Kamil Gradek and Vlad Van Mechelen, but Bahrain do not look like a pure sprint squad. Their best Tour may come from mixing GC consistency with selective attacking.

For Mohorič’s route fit, see our Tour de France 2026 breakaway specialists to watch, while the main climbing opportunities are covered in our Tour de France 2026 mountain stages ranked by difficulty.

divFinding-out-I-wasnt-doing-the-Tour-de-France-via-the-media-was-what-made-me-most-unhappy-–-Fernando-Gaviria-on-comeback-trail-with-new-squad-Caja-Rural-Seguros-RGAdiv-1

Caja Rural-Seguros RGA

Riders: Abel Balderstone, Sebastian Berwick, Fernando Gaviria, Alex Molenaar, Joel Nicolau, Stefano Oldani, Jakub Otruba, José Félix Parra

Caja Rural-Seguros RGA will need to race aggressively. They do not have a yellow jersey contender and are unlikely to control sprint stages, so the obvious path is breakaways, visibility and opportunistic stage hunting.

Fernando Gaviria gives them a recognised sprint name, but the Tour sprint field is deep. Against Philipsen, Merlier, Kooij, De Lie and Girmay, Gaviria will need positioning, timing and perhaps a messy finish rather than a pure speed contest.

Stefano Oldani is a useful stage-hunting option, particularly on rolling days where experience and tactical timing matter. Alex Molenaar, Sebastian Berwick and José Félix Parra should be looking at breakaway opportunities, especially if the peloton allows smaller teams to animate the race.

The key for Caja Rural is presence. They need riders in the right moves, not just early doomed breakaways. A stage win would be a major result, but repeated aggressive racing and a serious mountain or rolling-stage challenge would already make their Tour worthwhile.

For a beginner-friendly explanation of those tactics, see what is a breakaway in the Tour de France? and our Tour de France 2026 route: best days for breakaways.

Cofidis

Riders: Piet Allegaert, Alex Aranburu, Jenthe Biermans, Milan Fretin, Ion Izagirre, Alex Kirsch, Hugo Page, Benjamin Thomas

Cofidis have one of the more flexible squads on the startlist. They are not built around a single GC leader, but they have several riders who can target different kinds of stages.

Alex Aranburu is the most obvious reduced-finish threat. He can be dangerous on rolling stages, uphill finishes and days that are too hard for pure sprinters. Milan Fretin and Hugo Page give Cofidis sprint options, while Jenthe Biermans can also be effective in harder fast finishes.

Ion Izagirre remains a useful mountain and breakaway rider, particularly on days where experience matters. Benjamin Thomas gives the team another tactical card on rolling terrain, especially if the breakaway is built more around engines than pure climbers.

Piet Allegaert and Alex Kirsch bring support and positioning. Cofidis may not dominate any one category, but they have enough variety to be present in sprints, reduced groups and breakaways.

Their best Tour likely involves stage hunting rather than one fixed objective. The route’s hilly and rolling middle section should suit them better than the highest mountain stages. For the most likely stage types, see our Tour de France 2026 sprint stages ranked and Tour de France 2026 breakaway stages ranked.

Decathlon CMA CGM Team

Riders: Tiesj Benoot, Cees Bol, Daan Hoole, Olav Kooij, Aurélien Paret-Peintre, Nicolas Prodhomme, Matthew Riccitello, Paul Seixas

Decathlon CMA CGM Team have one of the most intriguing squads in the race because they carry several objectives at once. Olav Kooij gives them a top-level sprinter, Paul Seixas gives them a major French storyline, Matthew Riccitello adds young climbing quality, and Aurélien Paret-Peintre gives them mountain-stage depth.

Kooij is the clearest route to stage wins. With Cees Bol as a lead-out option, Daan Hoole as a power rider and Tiesj Benoot as a road captain, Decathlon can build a real sprint train. The question is whether they can commit enough resources to that train while also protecting young climbing ambitions.

Seixas will attract major French attention. The Tour may come early for a rider still developing, but his presence changes the team’s emotional and tactical profile. If he is targeting the white jersey or a strong mountain showing, Benoot, Prodhomme, Paret-Peintre and Riccitello become crucial.

This is the kind of mixed team that could win a sprint, place a rider high in the young rider standings and still attack mountain stages. The danger is spreading resources too thin. The upside is that Decathlon have options almost every day.

For Seixas context, see Paul Seixas and the next French Tour de France generation. For Kooij’s likely sprint opportunities, see our Tour de France 2026 sprinters guide.

divI-want-to-lead-by-example-–-Ben-Healy-extends-contract-with-EF-Education-EasyPostdiv-1

EF Education-EasyPost

Riders: Kasper Asgreen, Alex Baudin, Richard Carapaz, Ben Healy, Sean Quinn, Georg Steinhauser, Michael Valgren, Max Walker

EF Education-EasyPost look like one of the most aggressive teams in the race. They may not be built around a straightforward yellow jersey campaign, but they have a superb mix of breakaway riders, mountain attackers and rouleurs.

Ben Healy is the central stage-hunting figure. He suits the hilly and mountain breakaway days, particularly when the race becomes attritional and awkward to control. Richard Carapaz gives EF high mountain danger if he is not fully committed to GC. Georg Steinhauser is another strong mountain-stage option.

Kasper Asgreen gives the team a powerful rouleur card for long-range moves, while Michael Valgren adds experience on hard rolling stages. Sean Quinn, Alex Baudin and Max Walker give the squad support and flexibility.

EF’s Tour should be active rather than passive. They have the riders to attack in the Massif Central, Vosges, Jura and Alps. Their challenge is choosing the right days. If Healy, Carapaz and Steinhauser all spend energy in the wrong moves, the team could burn matches quickly. If they time it right, EF could be one of the most visible teams of the race.

For stage-hunting context, see our Tour de France 2026 stage hunters to watch, Tour de France 2026 Massif Central guide and Tour de France 2026 Vosges and Jura guide.

Groupama-FDJ United

Riders: Clément Berthet, Afonso Clément Braz, Ewen Costiou, Lorenzo Germani, Romain Grégoire, Guillaume Martin-Guyonnet, Quentin Pacher, Clément Russo

Groupama-FDJ United arrive with a French stage-hunting identity. Romain Grégoire is the headline name because he can target punchy stages, reduced finishes and aggressive hilly days. The route gives him several possible opportunities.

Quentin Pacher, Clément Berthet and Ewen Costiou give the team breakaway depth. They should be active on rolling and mountain days, especially when the race moves into terrain that is hard enough to break sprint control but not completely dominated by GC teams.

Guillaume Martin-Guyonnet offers another interesting angle if he is given climbing freedom, while Lorenzo Germani, Afonso Clément Braz and Clément Russo give the team work rate and escape options.

The team’s challenge is conversion. French teams can animate the Tour, but stage wins require precision. Groupama-FDJ United need to get riders into the right breaks, especially on days where the strongest GC teams do not want to chase.

Grégoire is their best chance of a headline result. If he can survive the hard approach and still sprint or attack late, he can give the team a major French moment.

For broader home-rider context, see our best French riders to watch at the Tour de France 2026.

divIts-been-a-few-tough-days-Juan-Ayuso-abandons-Itzulia-Basque-Country-before-chance-to-climb-out-of-large-GC-deficitdiv-1

Lidl-Trek

Riders: Juan Ayuso, Derek Gee-West, Mads Pedersen, Quinn Simmons, Mattias Skjelmose, Toms Skujiņš, Mathias Vacek, Carlos Verona

Lidl-Trek have one of the most complete and tactically interesting squads in the race. They can target stage wins, the green jersey, hilly breakaways, and possibly a strong GC showing through Juan Ayuso or Mattias Skjelmose.

Mads Pedersen gives them a hard-stage sprint and points-classification weapon. He may not be the fastest pure sprinter in the race, but he can survive terrain that drops others. If the green jersey battle becomes more than bunch sprints, Pedersen could be dangerous.

Ayuso and Skjelmose give the team GC and mountain-stage depth. The route’s time-trial and summit finishes may suit Ayuso if he is in full Tour form, while Skjelmose gives Lidl-Trek another high-level climbing option.

The supporting cast is outstanding. Toms Skujiņš, Quinn Simmons, Mathias Vacek and Carlos Verona are all useful in different ways, from rolling breakaways to mountain support. Derek Gee-West adds another durable racing option.

Lidl-Trek could be one of the most active teams in the race because they do not need to wait for one scenario. They can sprint with Pedersen, attack with Skujiņš or Simmons, support GC with Verona, and use Ayuso or Skjelmose on harder days.

For Pedersen’s route fit, see Mads Pedersen at the Tour de France 2026, while the wider points battle is covered in our Tour de France 2026 jerseys explained.

Tour-de-Wallonie-Relief-for-Arnaud-De-Lie-with-hard-fought-victory-on-stage-4-1Photo Credit: Getty

Lotto-Intermarché

Riders: Huub Artz, Jenno Berckmoes, Lars Craps, Arnaud De Lie, Liam Slock, Lennert Van Eetvelt, Baptiste Veistroffer, Georg Zimmermann

Lotto-Intermarché have a strong mixture of sprint ambition and attacking depth. Arnaud De Lie is the headline sprinter, but this is not a pure sprint squad. Lennert Van Eetvelt and Georg Zimmermann give the team harder-stage options, while Jenno Berckmoes and Baptiste Veistroffer can animate breakaways.

De Lie has enough power to win Tour stages, especially in finishes that are physical, draggy or slightly chaotic. The question is his lead-out structure. Against Alpecin-Premier Tech and Soudal Quick-Step, Lotto-Intermarché may need him to use instinct and positioning rather than a perfect train.

Van Eetvelt gives the team a climbing card. He could be used for stage hunting or a general classification tilt depending on form and team priorities. Zimmermann is a strong fit for rolling and hilly breakaways, especially in the middle of the race.

This is a team that should not be judged only by sprint finishes. If De Lie wins, the Tour is already a success. But Lotto-Intermarché can also make the race through attacks, reduced finishes and opportunistic mountain days.

For De Lie’s sprint context, see our best sprinters at the Tour de France 2026 and best lead-out riders at the Tour de France 2026.

Unlucky-start-to-life-at-Movistar-for-Cian-Uijtdebroeks-as-fracture-found-after-crash-at-debut-race-1Photo Credit: Getty

Movistar Team

Riders: Pablo Castrillo, Jefferson Cepeda, Raúl García, Michel Heßmann, Nelson Oliveira, Javier Romo, Einer Rubio, Cian Uijtdebroeks

Movistar Team have reshaped into a squad built around climbing depth, stage opportunities and Cian Uijtdebroeks as a longer-term GC project. This is not a classic Movistar team with one established podium contender, but it has several ways to influence the race.

Uijtdebroeks is the rider who gives the team its clearest GC storyline. The route is hard enough to test him properly, especially with repeated mountain blocks and a time-trial. A top-10 push would be valuable, but the team may need to manage expectations depending on how he handles the early race.

Einer Rubio and Jefferson Cepeda are strong climbing-stage options. Both can be dangerous from breakaways, especially if they are allowed freedom once the GC hierarchy settles. Pablo Castrillo and Javier Romo add further attacking potential.

Nelson Oliveira and Michel Heßmann give the team power and structure, while Raúl García adds another developing piece. Movistar’s best Tour may come from combining Uijtdebroeks’ GC consistency with stage hunting from Rubio, Cepeda or Castrillo.

The key question is whether they protect one leader or race more freely. The route may push them towards a hybrid approach. For the days that could suit that approach, see our Tour de France 2026 route: best days for breakaways.

Netcompany INEOS

Riders: Thymen Arensman, Filippo Ganna, Dorian Godon, Michał Kwiatkowski, Carlos Rodríguez, Kévin Vauquelin

Netcompany INEOS have a compact but high-quality squad on the supplied list. Carlos Rodríguez and Kévin Vauquelin give them two serious GC or high overall options, while Filippo Ganna and Michał Kwiatkowski provide power, experience and tactical depth.

Rodríguez is the more established Grand Tour leader. The route’s mountain structure should suit him, but he will need to limit losses in the Barcelona team time-trial and the individual time-trial. Vauquelin adds a French angle and could be dangerous on hilly stages if he is not locked into pure support.

Arensman gives the team another climbing helper or mountain-stage option. Ganna is a major asset in the team time-trial, individual time-trial and positioning phases. Kwiatkowski remains one of the most valuable road captains in the race, especially on transitional and mountain approach stages.

Dorian Godon gives the squad a reduced-finish option, particularly if a hilly day becomes too hard for the sprinters but not selective enough for climbers.

The team’s biggest question is numbers. With only six riders listed here, depth may be an issue if the race becomes attritional. But in terms of quality, Netcompany INEOS have enough to influence GC, time-trials and selective stages.

For time-trial context, see our best time-triallists at the Tour de France 2026 and Tour de France 2026 team time-trial explained.

divFull-of-confidence-and-with-a-real-sense-of-anticipation-–-Can-Biniam-Girmay-recapture-his-2024-Tour-de-France-form-with-this-NSN-lead-outdivPhoto Credit: Getty

NSN Cycling Team

Riders: Lewis Askey, George Bennett, Marco Frigo, Biniam Girmay, Matis Louvel, Krists Neilands, Jake Stewart, Tom Van Asbroeck

NSN Cycling Team are built around Biniam Girmay’s points and stage-win ambitions, but they also have a strong breakaway structure. Girmay is the obvious headline rider because he can target bunch sprints, reduced sprints and harder finishes that trouble pure fast men.

Tom Van Asbroeck gives Girmay important support, while Jake Stewart and Lewis Askey add British interest and fast-finish options. Matis Louvel can help in positioning and harder stages.

The breakaway side is just as important. Krists Neilands is one of the best attacking riders on the squad, especially on rolling and mountain days. Marco Frigo brings similar value, while George Bennett gives the team climbing experience if he is given freedom.

The team’s Tour depends on how often Girmay is in contention. If he is close in the points classification, the squad may become more sprint-focused. If the green jersey battle becomes too difficult, Neilands, Frigo and Bennett can push the team into breakaway mode.

This is a versatile squad rather than a pure sprint train. That may suit the 2026 route well.

For points context, see our Tour de France 2026 jerseys explained. For the British names in the squad, see our best British riders to watch at the Tour de France 2026.

Pinarello-Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team

Riders: Quinten Hermans, Xandro Meurisse, Tom Pidcock, Fred Wright

On the supplied startlist, Pinarello-Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team appear with only four riders listed, but the identity is clear. This is a stage-hunting squad built around Tom Pidcock’s ability to win on technical, hilly and mountainous terrain.

Pidcock is the central figure. He can climb, descend, handle difficult roads and finish from reduced groups. The question is whether he approaches the Tour as a stage hunter or a GC outsider. His most realistic value looks like stage wins, especially in the Vosges, Jura or Alpine transition stages.

Fred Wright gives the team a strong British rouleur and breakaway option. He is well suited to rolling stages where commitment and engine power matter. Quinten Hermans adds punch for hilly finishes, while Xandro Meurisse brings experience and climbing support.

This is not a squad likely to control the race. It is a squad designed to make selections, join dangerous moves and target specific days. If Pidcock wins a stage, the Tour is a success. If Wright or Hermans also animate the race, the team’s presence becomes even stronger.

For Pidcock’s likely role, see our Tom Pidcock at the Tour de France 2026, best British riders to watch at the Tour de France 2026 and A history of Alpe d’Huez at the Tour de France.

Maxim van Gils 2026 Tour Auvergne Stage 6 (Getty)

Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe

Riders: Mattia Cattaneo, Nico Denz, Remco Evenepoel, Jai Hindley, Florian Lipowitz, Jan Tratnik, Tim van Dijke, Maxim Van Gils

Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe arrive with one of the strongest GC squads in the race. Remco Evenepoel is the central figure, but Jai Hindley, Florian Lipowitz, Mattia Cattaneo, Jan Tratnik and Maxim Van Gils give the team depth across different terrain.

Evenepoel’s route fit is fascinating. The Barcelona team time-trial and the individual time-trial in Haute-Savoie are obvious opportunities, but the repeated mountain blocks will test how far he can push the yellow jersey battle against Pogačar and Vingegaard.

Hindley gives the team Grand Tour climbing experience. Lipowitz adds another high-level mountain option and could be used either as support or a protected rider. Cattaneo and Tratnik are crucial because they can position, pace and support Evenepoel in transitional and time-trial-like terrain.

Van Gils gives the team a punchier stage option, while Denz and Van Dijke add strength for flat and rolling stages.

This is a squad with podium ambition, not just stage hopes. Their biggest challenge is turning strength into clarity. If Evenepoel is the leader, the support must be disciplined. If the race turns against him, Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe have enough riders to chase stage wins or protect a secondary GC option.

For more on the GC hierarchy, see our Tour de France 2026 GC favourites ranked and Remco Evenepoel at the Tour de France 2026.

Soudal Quick-Step

Riders: Pascal Eenkhoorn, Tim Merlier, Valentin Paret-Peintre, Jasper Stuyven, Dylan van Baarle, Bert Van Lerberghe, Ilan Van Wilder, Louis Vervaeke

Soudal Quick-Step look more sprint and stage-focused than yellow-jersey focused on this startlist. Tim Merlier is the obvious headline rider because he can win bunch sprints, and the support around him is strong.

Bert Van Lerberghe gives Merlier a trusted final lead-out, while Jasper Stuyven and Dylan van Baarle provide power, positioning and classics experience. That makes Soudal Quick-Step one of the main threats to Alpecin-Premier Tech on flat stages.

The rest of the squad adds flexibility. Valentin Paret-Peintre is a strong mountain breakaway option. Ilan Van Wilder and Louis Vervaeke give climbing support and stage-race depth. Pascal Eenkhoorn can contribute on rolling days and in breakaways.

The team’s challenge is balancing Merlier’s sprint campaign with stage-hunting and mountain opportunities. If the flat stages are controlled, Merlier can deliver major results. If the race becomes harder and more selective, Stuyven, Paret-Peintre or Van Wilder may become more relevant.

This is a well-balanced Tour squad, but its success will probably be measured first by sprint wins.

For Merlier’s sprint context, see our best lead-out riders at the Tour de France 2026 and Tour de France 2026 sprint stages ranked.

Team Jayco-AlUla

Riders: Pascal Ackermann, Luke Durbridge, Felix Engelhardt, Michael Matthews, Kelland O’Brien, Ben O’Connor, Luke Plapp, Mauro Schmid

Team Jayco-AlUla have a versatile squad with several different ways to win. Ben O’Connor gives them a GC or high mountain classification option, while Michael Matthews and Pascal Ackermann cover different sprint profiles.

O’Connor is the key for the overall. The route’s repeated climbing gives him opportunities, but he will need support and consistency across all three weeks. Luke Plapp can be valuable on hilly and mountain terrain, while Luke Durbridge and Kelland O’Brien provide power and positioning.

Matthews is the team’s best reduced-finish rider. He can target stages that are too hard for pure sprinters but not selective enough for climbers. Ackermann gives the team a more traditional sprint option, though the lead-out may not be as strong as the biggest sprint squads.

Mauro Schmid and Felix Engelhardt add attacking flexibility. Both can be useful in breakaways or hard rolling stages.

The strength of Jayco-AlUla is versatility. The weakness is that versatility can blur priorities. If they choose the right leader on the right day, they can win stages. If they spread themselves too thin, they may be visible without converting.

For the mixed sprint-stage profile that could suit Matthews, see our Tour de France 2026 route: best days for sprinters.

Team Picnic PostNL

Riders: Warren Barguil, Frits Biesterbos, Pavel Bittner, John Degenkolb, Robbe Dhondt, Niklas Märkl, Julius van den Berg, Frank van den Broek

Team Picnic PostNL have a clear split between sprint development and breakaway ambition. Pavel Bittner is the fast finisher, supported by John Degenkolb, Niklas Märkl, Julius van den Berg and Robbe Dhondt. Warren Barguil and Frank van den Broek give the team harder-stage options.

Bittner is quick, but the Tour sprint field is unforgiving. Degenkolb’s experience could be crucial in helping him survive the chaos of the final kilometres. Märkl and van den Berg can help build the approach, though this is not the most dominant sprint train in the race.

Barguil is the obvious mountain breakaway name. He may no longer be the same rider who once shaped the polka-dot battle, but he remains valuable on hard days where experience and timing matter. Van den Broek is one of the more interesting attacking options, especially on hilly stages.

The team’s likely Tour is stage-focused. A Bittner sprint podium, a Barguil mountain breakaway, or a Van den Broek attacking day would all be strong outcomes.

Their best chance may come when the race becomes too hard for pure sprint control but not hard enough for full GC domination. For that type of racing, see our Tour de France 2026 breakaway stages ranked.

07/07/2024 - Tour de France 2024 - Étape 9 - Troyes / Troyes (199 km) - TURGIS Anthony (TOTALENERGIES)Photo Credit: ASO-Charly Lopez

Team TotalEnergies

Riders: Nicolas Breuillard, Joris Delbove, Alexandre Delettre, Thibault Guernalec, Jordan Jegat, Mathis Le Berre, Anthony Turgis, Mattéo Vercher

Team TotalEnergies have no choice but to race aggressively. Their Tour will be built around breakaways, French visibility and stage-hunting opportunities.

Anthony Turgis is the most recognisable stage-winning threat. He suits rolling, classics-style days where strength, positioning and timing matter. Jordan Jegat is the more obvious mountain option, especially if the breakaway is given space on a climbing day.

Mathis Le Berre and Mattéo Vercher should also be active in escapes, while Thibault Guernalec, Alexandre Delettre, Joris Delbove and Nicolas Breuillard give the team work rate and breakaway coverage.

For a team like TotalEnergies, the Tour is about presence as much as pure results. They need riders in moves, especially on medium mountain and transition days. But the aim should not be token visibility. They need to place their strongest riders in breaks that can actually survive.

The 2026 route gives them chances. The Massif Central, Vosges and late transition stages could be the best terrain. Turgis and Jegat are the two names most likely to turn aggression into a serious stage result.

For the most suitable terrain, see our Tour de France 2026 Massif Central guide and Tour de France 2026 Vosges and Jura guide.

Riders: Edoardo Affini, Bruno Armirail, Victor Campenaerts, Per Strand Hagenes, Matteo Jorgenson, Sepp Kuss, Davide Piganzoli, Jonas Vingegaard

Team Visma | Lease a Bike are built around Jonas Vingegaard and the yellow jersey. The squad is not as stacked with obvious star climbers as some past Visma Tour line-ups, but it has a clear structure: protect Vingegaard, control the mountain stages, and use the team time-trial and tactical days to stay ahead of danger.

Matteo Jorgenson is the key support rider. He can climb, position, attack and act as a satellite rider. Sepp Kuss remains vital in the high mountains, especially when the race reaches the Alps. Davide Piganzoli gives the team another climbing option, while Bruno Armirail, Edoardo Affini, Victor Campenaerts and Per Strand Hagenes bring power for flat, rolling and time-trial-like sections.

Campenaerts and Affini are especially useful in the Barcelona team time-trial and in controlling approaches before climbs. Armirail can work in the mountains and long valleys. Hagenes gives the team another rider for harder rolling stages.

Vingegaard’s route challenge is clear: survive the early pressure, limit any time-trial damage, then make the high mountains count. The team’s ability to isolate Pogačar or respond to UAE attacks may decide the race.

Tudor Pro Cycling Team

Riders: Julian Alaphilippe, Arvid de Kleijn, Marco Haller, Marc Hirschi, Rick Pluimers, Michael Storer, Matteo Trentin, Yannis Voisard

Tudor Pro Cycling Team have one of the best stage-hunting squads in the race. Julian Alaphilippe and Marc Hirschi give them punchy finishing options, Michael Storer gives them a climbing card, and Matteo Trentin adds experience and tactical value.

Alaphilippe remains the emotional headline. He may not be the same rider who once shaped the Tour almost at will, but on the right punchy day, he can still turn instinct into a stage win. Hirschi may be just as dangerous on some finishes, particularly if the stage ends from a reduced group after short climbs.

Storer is the key mountain-stage hunter. He should target breakaways in the Vosges, Jura or Alps if the GC teams allow the move to go. Trentin can help on rolling stages or act as a fast finisher in reduced groups.

Arvid de Kleijn gives the team a sprint option, though the Tour’s top sprint field will make victories difficult. Marco Haller, Rick Pluimers and Yannis Voisard add support and breakaway depth.

Tudor’s Tour should be aggressive. They are not here to control the race. They are here to win from the chaos.

For a wider look at that type of rider, see our Tour de France 2026 stage hunters to watch.

78th Tour Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes 2026 - Stage 7

UAE Team Emirates-XRG

Riders: Isaac del Toro, Felix Großschartner, Brandon McNulty, Tadej Pogačar, Nils Politt, Florian Vermeersch, Tim Wellens, Adam Yates

UAE Team Emirates-XRG have the strongest squad in the race on paper. Tadej Pogačar is the leader, Adam Yates is a high-level climbing lieutenant, Isaac del Toro adds huge upside, Brandon McNulty gives power and climbing support, and Tim Wellens, Nils Politt, Florian Vermeersch and Felix Großschartner provide depth across almost every terrain.

The team is built to win yellow, not just defend it. Pogačar can attack in the mountains, in hilly stages and even on days where other GC riders want calm. The route gives him multiple platforms: the Pyrenees, Massif Central, Vosges, Jura, individual time-trial and the final Alpe d’Huez weekend.

Yates is crucial because he can stay deep into mountain stages. Del Toro is the fascinating wild card, either as support, stage hunter or protected young rider depending on how the race develops. McNulty is valuable in time-trial-like terrain and mountain approaches. Großschartner is a reliable climbing helper.

Politt and Vermeersch give UAE the power to control flat and rolling stages, while Wellens can be used as a tactical satellite rider or stage-winning card.

The only risk is tactical overreach. UAE have so many options that they may be tempted to race every day. If they focus that strength around Pogačar, they are the team to beat.

Uno-X Mobility

Riders: Jonas Abrahamsen, Anthon Charmig, Magnus Cort, Anders Halland Johannessen, Tobias Halland Johannessen, Anders Skaarseth, Torstein Træen, Søren Wærenskjold

Uno-X Mobility have built a squad that should be visible across the race. They have sprint and reduced-sprint options through Søren Wærenskjold and Magnus Cort, climbing and breakaway depth through Torstein Træen and the Johannessen brothers, and aggressive support through Jonas Abrahamsen and Anders Skaarseth.

Cort is the most proven Tour stage hunter. He can win from breakaways, reduced groups and tactical finales. Wærenskjold gives the team power and sprint speed, particularly on flatter or rolling days where a pure bunch sprint is not guaranteed.

Træen is the strongest climbing card, while Anders Halland Johannessen and Tobias Halland Johannessen give the team options on hard, selective stages. Charmig and Skaarseth add breakaway coverage.

Uno-X may not control many stages, but they do not need to. Their best Tour comes from being in the right moves, using Cort’s finishing ability, and targeting days where the peloton does not have one obvious controlling team.

They are one of the teams most likely to animate the middle of the race. For the ideal terrain, see our Tour de France 2026 route: best days for breakaways.

XDS Astana Team

Riders: Davide Ballerini, Aaron Gate, Sergio Higuita, Max Kanter, Harold Tejada, Mike Teunissen, Simone Velasco, Nicolas Vinokurov

XDS Astana Team have a mixed squad with sprint, climbing and breakaway possibilities. Max Kanter gives them a sprint option, while Davide Ballerini and Simone Velasco are better suited to harder finishes or reduced groups.

Mike Teunissen is important because he brings lead-out and positioning experience. He can help Kanter or Ballerini in the final kilometres, especially when the sprint becomes disorganised. Aaron Gate adds engine power for flat and rolling stages.

Sergio Higuita and Harold Tejada are the climbing-stage options. Higuita is the more explosive name, while Tejada can be useful in mountain breakaways. Nicolas Vinokurov gives the team another attacking option.

Astana’s best chance is likely to come from opportunism rather than control. They should target breakaways, reduced finishes and stages where the major teams are watching each other. Kanter may contest flatter sprints, but the top-end sprint field is deep.

A stage win would be a major result. A strong Tour would involve repeated presence in the right moves, especially through Higuita, Tejada, Ballerini or Velasco.

8Bahrain VictoriousTiberi and Martinez provide two GC routes

UAE Team Emirates-XRG look the strongest squad overall because they can control flat stages, attack hilly days and support Pogačar deep into the mountains. Team Visma | Lease a Bike have the clearest single-leader identity around Vingegaard, while Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe have the most intriguing mix through Evenepoel, Hindley and Lipowitz.

Netcompany INEOS are harder to read because their supplied list is shorter, but the quality is high. Lidl-Trek may be the team most capable of mixing GC with points and stage wins.

Alpecin-Premier Tech have the best sprint structure, mainly because Philipsen has both specialist support and Van der Poel’s unique positioning ability. Soudal Quick-Step are the main rivals through Merlier, Van Lerberghe and Stuyven. Decathlon CMA CGM Team have the most interesting developing sprint train around Kooij.

The others may need messier finishes. Girmay and Matthews may prefer harder sprint days, De Lie can use strength and instinct, and Bittner, Kanter, Bauhaus, Fretin and Aranburu will need positioning to overcome the best trains.

EF Education-EasyPost look like the strongest breakaway team because they have several different attacking types. Tudor Pro Cycling Team have the best punchy-stage group. Lidl-Trek and Uno-X Mobility are both dangerous because they can send riders into different kinds of moves.

The 2026 route should reward this kind of depth. The Massif Central, Vosges, Jura and late transition days all give stage hunters a chance if the peloton does not fully commit.

Alpecin-Premier Tech may have the most repeatable stage-winning route because Philipsen should have multiple sprint chances. UAE Team Emirates-XRG, Team Visma | Lease a Bike and Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe will target the biggest GC stages. EF, Tudor, Lidl-Trek and Uno-X are the teams most likely to win from breakaways.

The most balanced teams are those with multiple routes to victory. Lidl-Trek, EF and Tudor stand out here because they do not need one specific race pattern to be successful.

For the biggest climbing days, see our Tour de France 2026 summit finishes guide and Tour de France 2026 queen stage guide.

Team-by-team verdict

The Tour de France 2026 looks like a race where squad identity will matter as much as individual talent. UAE Team Emirates-XRG have the strongest all-round team and the clearest favourite in Pogačar. Team Visma | Lease a Bike have the most focused yellow jersey structure around Vingegaard. Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe have the strongest third-way GC challenge through Evenepoel.

Behind them, the race opens up. Lidl-Trek have one of the most tactically flexible squads. EF Education-EasyPost and Tudor Pro Cycling Team should animate the breakaway days. Alpecin-Premier Tech and Soudal Quick-Step have the best sprint structures. Decathlon CMA CGM Team bring one of the most interesting mixed squads, with Kooij, Seixas and Riccitello giving them several different stories.

The invited and stage-hunting teams will matter too. TotalEnergies, Caja Rural-Seguros RGA, Uno-X Mobility, Team Picnic PostNL and XDS Astana Team all need to race actively. If they wait for the race to come to them, the big teams will swallow the best opportunities. If they attack at the right times, the 2026 route gives them enough awkward terrain to make the Tour unpredictable.

The yellow jersey may still come down to Pogačar, Vingegaard and Evenepoel. But the race around them will be shaped team by team, through sprint trains, breakaways, domestiques, mountain support and tactical decisions made long before the final climb.
